How to successfully combine vintage and modern design
Café New One, situated in an early 20th century building in Olomouc, Czech Republic, is a venue that successfully marries vintage and modern design. Microtopping was chosen to decorate the retro space and bring a sense of continuity and texture, all without sacrificing the unmatched functionality of Ideal Work’s cement coating. Thanks to an attentive redesign by designer Jan Nedvěd (Nedvěd Architekti), the space has been completely re-imagined: the lower floor is now a coffee shop, whilst the upper floor is a multi-purpose space which functions as a venue for events, exhibitions, shows and stores. Around an industrial core, a space has sprung up where multiple styles can coexist – from vintage design to minimalist modernity all the way through to the Zen style – and no element is left to chance, but rather guided by painstaking attention to detail and a meticulous selection of furniture and accessories.
Microtopping was chosen to add value to this space thanks to its flexibility and its ability to adapt to any style, acting as an ideal backdrop for any architectural option.
This innovative cement coating was used for part of the floor and walls of the large hospitality area. As a very workable and highly adhesive material, it can be applied to a variety of surfaces both horizontally and vertically. It was also used in the Zen-style bathroom: the colour chosen (black) contrasts with the light shades of the stones, the fittings and the understated ceiling lights, creating a strikingly elegant effect.
As well as being extremely versatile, Microtopping is a very resistant material which is capable of withstanding moisture: it has passed several waterproofing and steam resistance tests.
